The mystery behind the end of the world.
2012(Image of the calendar is given here)
December 21, 2012, (12-21-2012), is a day some believe is the end of the world. However, it is really the end date of the Mayan Long Count Calendar. The Mayans(see link for more info on the mayans) were an ancient civilization in Mesoamerica. The created several ideals, and objects, we use like the calendar. The Mayan Long Count Calendar ended on the 13th b’ak’tun. The b’ak’tun is the largest symbol on the calendar. So, people believe that when we reach this date, which will occur on December 21, 2012, the world will end. The Mayan Year Zero is set on this date, and is said to be the end of the current world, and beginning of a new one.
Over the years, scientist, archaeologist, and Mayan decedents, have looked in to this account. They have concluded that the Calendar ends on December 21st, but not that it is the “end of the world”. This idea has been formed from the media. There is still controversy however, that the end date is true, and there is scarce Mayan writing relevant to the date. This has led some to believe that the Mayan calendar is completely irrelevant, to any belief, and that it may be a lie in general.
Each b’ak’tun is a small cycle of the Age of the Fifth Sun. The Mayans said that after every 5,125 years a new cycle would begin. Each cycle is said to be ruled, and destroyed by on of the five Mayan elements. This current cycle is under rule of earth. So at the end of the 13 b’ak’tun of this cycle, and the end of the age, (12-21-12) the world will be destroyed by the earth, thus completing the Age of the Fifth Sun. since this is the last Age the earth will no be remade.
The end of the Mayan Long Count also occurs on the same day, as the sun appears in the edge of the Milky Way. This creates the galactic plane though the Milky Way. This is another theory created by people, but ties in because it is said to be the entrance to the underworld. With these two dates falling together, creates some very interesting doomsday theories. These range from, hilarious, religious, and scientific, to accounts from the Mayans the self.
The Overall Prophecy:
The prophecy of 2012 is a complicating and slightly contradicting theory. The base of this is that at the completion of the 13th b’ak’tun, the world will be utterly annihilated and a new one began. This entails that a life being destroyed. The world will supposedly go through several destructive changes including, massive earthquakes, super volcanoes, solar storms, and flipping of the earths poles. These lead to the destruction of the world. Some of these events have actually been semi-proven to occur during 2012.
The Real Deal:
There is no proven event to occur on December 21, 2012. however, these theories make
an interesting way of looking at it. The Mayans had many calendars and many
predictions. Almost all have these have been true. So, what’s to keep us from believing in
the end of the world? Just don’t make any important plans.
